Great Horned Owl

The great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) has a reputation as a fierce hunter, sometimes attacking birds as large as great blue herons or osprey. The four to seven low hoots of this large owl will silence any smaller owls that may be calling. From a distance, the great horned owl may sound like a barking dog. One of the best ways to locate this common predator is to locate raucous crows and hurry to the scene. Crows consider it their business to harass and mob any great horned owl they find.
