Umbrella Magnolia

Taking its name from its whorled leaves which resemble an umbrella, this small tree is fairly common at low altitudes. It frequents protected ravines where the soil is moist and displays showy white flowers in the spring. Magnolia tripetala is fragrant from a distance, but up close, the blossoms have a disagreeable odor.
