[Fig. 12(2)] Located in the town of Harrogate only a couple miles south of the gap, Lincoln Memorial University is the site of the Abraham Lincoln Museum, one of the largest Lincoln and Civil War collections in the country. The university was founded shortly after the Civil War by Union General Oliver Otis Howard to fulfill Lincoln's wish to help the people of eastern Tennessee who supported him during the war. The museum also serves as a teaching facility for the university.
