The yellownose vole, or rock vole (Microtus chrotorrhinus), lives at the southern end of its range in the southern Appalachian Mountains. This rarely seen, secretive forest creature lives in moist areas where it can dine on moss, grasses, berries, underground fungi, and some caterpillars. This mammal is listed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency as one that is in need of management because it is so rare in the state.
