Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) The anhinga, also called the snakebird and water turkey, has a commonly observed habit of perching with its wings outstretched, which some believe is the bird’s attempt to dry its wings. The bird spends a lot of time in the water, where it hunts fish, frogs, and even small alligators. It swims with its snakelike head and neck above the surface.
