The original Long Key Bridge has been maintained for use as a fishing pier, walking trail, and bicycling path. It's one of seven sections now open of the planned Overseas Heritage Trail, which will stretch from Key Largo to Key West. The seven sections make up the first 17.5 miles of the trail. Eventually 90 miles of trail will be available. Whenever possible, old bridges will be used, and in some cases reconnected, to carry the trail from key to key. The Florida Rails to Trails Conservancy is working with Monroe County to establish the trail.
