Spotted Bass

Take a second look at what first appears to be a striped bass caught at Claytor Lake. It could be a spotted bass (Micropterus punctulatus). This feisty sport fish with the elongated body has a telltale tooth patch on the tongue. Also, instead of dark gray stripes on a silver-white side, it has small rows of black spots on its lower side.
