Even in the doldrums of a hot summer day, the musical, robinlike song of the red-eyed vireo can bring the woods to life. This common woodland bird is found not only on the Wilderness Road Trail, but throughout Virginia's hardwood forests. The sparrow-sized vireo is olive-green above and whitish below, and it has a distinguishing red eye.
