Catawba Rhododendron

Many travelers time their mountain visits to coincide with the May and early-June blossoming of Rhododendron catawbiense. The flower clusters on this eye-catching rhododendron range from pinkish purple to purple. The evergreen thickets grow on mountain slopes and along stream banks, forming shady canopies over hiking trails. The higher the altitude, the later the bloom.
