Broad-winged Hawk

The crow-size broadwing (Buteo platypterus), living in canopied woods, may go unnoticed until its fall migration. Then hundreds fill the sky over High Knob and at other mountain lookouts, sometimes forming "kettles" of circling birds using warm updrafts to gain altitude.
