Beaver

The sudden slap on the water is probably the resident beaver (Castor canadensis) sounding a warning with its broad, flat tail. This large, nocturnal rodent, prized for its fur, was once trapped out of much of its former range. With protection, the beaver is staging a comeback in Virginia.
