Indian pipe (Monotropa uniflora) is a delightful, translucent white plant that appears trailside throughout summer. Unusual for a flowering plant, Indian pipe lacks chlorophyll and therefore cannot manufacture its own food. Instead, its roots obtain nutrition from decayed organic material, a feeding trait more commonly associated with saprophytic mushrooms.
