Valley Tassels

A beautiful member of the snapdragon family, the valley tassel (Castilleja attenuata) looks like a big-nosed character from an animated Disney movie. Its flowers usually contain several blossoms with dark spots on either side of a long, cream-colored extension. The flowers can be found in the grasslands along the foothills on the western slope of the Sierra. They bloom in May.
